Library & Archives Food & Drink Policy (Fall 2022)

To protect library materials, equipment, furnishings, and to ensure a respectful study environment, Trent University Library & Archives have instituted a food and drink policy.

We understand that individuals need to keep up energy while working and studying in the library and that snacks and drinks may be needed. With that in mind, the following guidelines will be in effect:

Permitted:

  • Food and drinks are permitted in general study areas (i.e. at tables and study carrels, including group study rooms);
  • Lidded beverages are permitted;
  • Low mess snacks are permitted (i.e. granola bars, crackers, food that is not prone to spillage or staining etc.)

Not permitted:

  • Delivery of food or drinks to the library is not permitted; delivery drivers may be denied entry
  • Alcoholic beverages are not permitted
  • Food gatherings or communal meals are not permitted (pizza parties, potlucks, birthday celebrations, etc.)
  • Plates, trays, and other dishes from Food Services are not permitted
  • Food and drink may be restricted in certain areas of the library (I.e. archives, sensitive areas, quiet study rooms).

Food and drink that is not permitted as per the policy must be removed from the library.  If you are studying in the library and are uncertain whether your food is permitted, you are invited to speak to staff at the Library Service desk.

To ensure an environment conducive to study, we ask that you dispose of any garbage and recycling and report spills or messes to Library staff.

From time-to-time University sanctioned events in Library spaces will be permitted and are an exception to this policy.
