Biographical history
Betty Lynn Viney (now Schwab), formerly of Kenora, Ontario, was a student at Trent University from 1965 to 1969. When Viney arrived at Trent’s Catharine Parr Traill College in 1965, the residence rooms were not yet ready; she lived with Professor Sandeman and his family until the rooms were completed. Viney is married to Robert Schwab and lives in Ottawa, Ontario.

Fonds was in the custody of Betty Lynn Schwab before being donated to Trent University Archives in 2018 and 2019.

Fonds is comprised of audio tapes, scrapbooks and photographs related to Betty Lynn Viney’s experience as a student at Trent University from 1965 to 1969.

Ten reel-to-reel audio tapes recorded by Viney and members of her family living in Kenora, Ontario while Viney was a student at Trent University.
The tapes, purchased by Viney’s parents for their daughter upon her leaving for University and recorded during the academic years 1965-1969, served as a means of communicating back and forth; they include weekly accounts of the minutiae of daily University life. In Viney’s words, “these tapes are the weekly accounts of the minutiae of daily life as a naïve, young, brand new Grade 13 graduate, from a little, distant town, entering the academic life in which she would dwell...” These tapes, created during Trent’s early years of operation, provide a first-hand student perspective of daily life at the new undergraduate institution and offer a glimpse of historical family dialogue during this period of transition.

Three scrapbooks compiled by Viney, 1965-1969.
Items in the scrapbooks relate to Viney’s Trent student experience: letters from professors, a scolding from a don, notes from student friends, cards and notes from Viney’s mother, posters, invitations, ticket stubs, newspaper articles, pamphlets and advertisements, announcements, and memos. The scrapbooks also cover part of Viney’s final year of high school in Kenora as she prepared to move to Peterborough.
