Encrypting an OSX Computer using File Vault

As part of the core Apple operating system (OSX) each Apple computer is equipped with a feature called FileVault, that enables you to easily encrypt the device. The following instructions will overview how to encrypt your device using this technology.

  • Login to the computer normally, and select Settings (from either the Apple menu at the top of the screen, or from the icon in your dock)
  • Click Security and Privacy in the settings menu

  • Click the FileVault tab

  • Click the Lock button and enter the administrative username and password
  • Click the button to turn on FileVault
