TRENTU.CA / Information Technology / Enabling Encryption using BitLocker - Windows PCs

Enabling Encryption using BitLocker - Windows PCs

BitLocker is a built in feature of Microsoft Windows which allows for the secure encryption of Windows devices. Enabling BitLocker requires changes to your computer BIOS, which may be difficult to implement. We recommend contacting it@trentu.ca to arrange for a service appointment where a technician will assist you with enabling this technology.

For users who feel comfortable making BIOS changes, please see the following tutorials for assistance in enabling the TPM chip on your windows device and enabling BitLocker

  • Enabling the TPM - A TPM is a hardware chip installed on your computer motherboard which allows for better encryption. Before proceeding with BitLocker encryption the TPM must be enabled please refer to this tutorial for details on enabling the TPM.
  • Once the TPM has been enabled, use these instructions to enable BitLocker and encrypt the drive
