Azure MFA - FAQs about MFA
What if I forget my phone?
When you enroll in MFA at Trent University we'll create several MFA options for you including the option of calling your desk phone. If you're not able to complete any of the MFA options, the service desk can grant you access to your account after we've verified your identity.
|Will I need to complete the MFA after every login?||MFA will be required at each login session when you login from a computer off-campus.|
|What if I don't have a mobile device?||Trent IT supports a credit-card sized device that contains a constantly changing code for use when MFA through a mobile device is not possible. Please email email@example.com for more information|
Once I enroll in MFA, what applications will I have to use it to gain access to?
|MFA will apply to any myTrent connected applications - any locations that you see the myTrent login screen for. Note - you are only required to sign in to these applications, and MFA, once per session and only when off-campus.|
|If I use a different SIM card when traveling will MFA still work?||This depends on the method used for MFA - The app-based method with Microsoft Authenticator uses data (mobile and/or WiFi) so it will remain active. If your phone number changes for any reason, phone and SMS push will not function until updated numbers are entered.|
|Does the App on my phone have the ability to spy on my photos, text messages, and other personal information?||Absolutely not. The Microsoft Authenticator app only has permission to send you push notifications and to access the camera when taking a picture of the QR code. It does not give Trent University access to any of the data on your device or the traffic that passes through it.|
|My mobile device was lost or stolen. What should I do?||If your mobile device was issued to you by the university, please contact Campus Security and firstname.lastname@example.org to let them know about the loss or theft of the device. Our team will work with you to determine how best to proceed with both the MFA options and the loss of the device.|
|Can I set up MFA and trust my device for a period of time?||
Registering your device with Microsoft Authenticator will enable it to receive push notifications when your account is accessed. However, at the current time, it's not possible to automatically accept the notifications on a trusted device.
|I set up MFA according to the guide, but it does not appear to be prompting me?||MFA will only prompt you to authenticate when you are off-campus and only after the IT service desk has added it to your account. If you are working off-campus and have received a confirmation email from IT that MFA is enabled on your account, please email us at email@example.com so we can assist you.|
|Can I trust or remember my computer so I'm not required to complete MFA on it every time I log in?||Our vendor for MFA (Microsoft) does have a feature where Trent computers imaged and managed by IT can be trusted, however, this requires additional changes to the way we manage devices at Trent and is planned for the future. There is no functionality available to trust non-managed devices.|
