Dear Faculty, Staff and Students,
Recently IT has become aware that an increase in scam and phishing messages related to the COVID-19 outbreak has been observed world-wide. These scams range from fake screening sites that ask for personal information, to non-legitimate donation sites that ask for relief funds to be donated in bitcoin.
In light of this, we would like to share the following tips with our community to avoid such scams:
- Always verify emails with legitimate sources, particularly those that have a tone of urgency or contain links to be clicked on.
- Always check for legitimate sites to donate too. For example, you can access the WHO disaster response fund by going to Google and entering “WHO COVID-19 response fund” rather than clicking on a link shared in an email.
- Legitimate sources will never ask you to donate or transfer funds using methods such as Bitcoin or Gift cards.
