Blackboard Document Preview Service Update

Tech Bulletin

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students

As part of an ongoing effort to modernize product offerings, Blackboard has replaced the document preview and markup service currently included with Blackboard Learn with a new product designed to enhance functionality and document compatibility.

Beginning in the 2018 Winter semester, the Crocodoc service that currently provides document preview and editing inside Blackboard will be replaced with a service called Box View. This service will offer similar functionality and improvements to Crocodoc, which has reached its end-of-life as determined by the vendor.

The conversion will take place January 3rd, 2018 before the Winter semester begins, and we anticipate a seamless transition. When the conversion is completed, the existing document preview service including all previous submissions and markups will be replaced.

All existing annotations and submitted documents will be converted to Box View over a 24-hour period and will appear in Box View once the transition has taken place.

To facilitate this transition, a user guide has been created for faculty and staff on using the upgraded Box tools: https://www.trentu.ca/it/services/user-guides/blackboard-faculty-grading-grading-with-inline-grading-box-view

Students will automatically see the new Box View service when reviewing previously submitted, or submitting new assignments – no action is necessary.

Thank you for your patience and understanding while we work to improve services.
