Canada Post Disruption


 Due to the possible Canada Post disruption, the Department of Human Resources is encouraging all staff and faculty take advantage of the E-services offered by Sun Life to avoid delays or disruptions in service with your Sun Life group benefits plan.

For instant processing: You can submit your claims online by visiting or you can use the ‘my Sun Life’ mobile app. If you are new to online claim submission you will need to sign-up and obtain an access ID. You can do this through the Customer Care Centre (1-800-361-6212) and generate your own password through the Sun Life website (

For claim payments: You can register to have claim payments electronically deposited into your bank account. For direct deposit information please visit If you do not have an access ID and password for, you can also register for direct deposit by:

• Faxing a void cheque to: 1-866-366-8616, including your contract number and your member ID.

• Calling the Customer Care Centre for advice: 1-800-361-6212

For those who still use paper claim forms: All paper claims can be faxed to the following toll free number: 1-855-641-0809. The Department of Human Resources will also courier claims to Sun Life on a weekly basis for the duration of the disruption. Please place your claim in a sealed envelope and drop it off to the Department of Human Resources, suite 116 in Blackburn Hall in the drop box.

New Online Employee Orientation


The Department of Human Resources is pleased to launch our new Online Employee Orientation. Various departments from across campus have worked together to create an accessible, creative and informative online orientation for all new employees to access. The Online Employee Orientation is mandatory for all new employees to complete. To review all content, it will take approximately 2 hours, which may be completed all at once, or split up over a few sessions. Once all sessions have been completed, a completion certificate will be provided that will automatically be kept on file electronically. All employees are invited to complete this training on Blackboard by logging in to their MyTrent Account.

Trent also recognizes the importance of in-person networking. Alongside the new Online Employee Orientation, in-person networking opportunities will be held each semester for all new employees regardless of their employment group or status (i.e. contract, regular, LTA, CUPE, OPSEU, TUFA, Exempt, Research etc.). The in-person networking events will provide new employees the opportunity to meet other colleagues, develop a greater connection with the Trent community, and will also include a guided tour of the campus.

2nd Annual Heart of Trent Appreciation Event


To All Trent Staff, Faculty, and Retirees,

In Spring 2015, hundreds of staff, faculty, and retirees from both Peterborough and Durham campuses attended the first Heart of Trent event held as part of Trent University’s 50th anniversary celebrations. The response to the event was overwhelmingly positive and as a result, we are pleased to announce that the Heart of Trent will now be held on an annual basis.

The Heart of Trent event will combine a number of celebratory events in honour of our employees, including the Annual Service Awards, the Provost’s Award, and the Nancy Simmons Smith Staff Award of Excellence in recognition of their outstanding work and service to Trent. This larger event will bring all staff, faculty, and retirees together to say “thank you” and to recognize the accomplishments and contributions by the University’s employees who play an invaluable role in Trent’s development and successes.

Changes Coming to New Employee Orientation

Update on Mandatory Training for All Employees


All new employees in Ontario, including student employees, casual employees, TAs, markers and volunteers receiving an honorarium of $500 or more, are required by law to complete the Ministry of Labour Health and Safety Worker Awareness Training on their first day of employment. New supervisors are required to complete the Ministry of Labour Health and Safety Supervisor Awareness Training.

Employees are only required to complete this Health and Safety Awareness training once. New employees who have completed their training at Trent University do not require proof of completion to be sent. If new employees have already completed this training through another employer, they must provide proof of completion to their supervisor prior to their start date. Supervisors are required to attach the proof of completion with the employee’s hiring paperwork, and inform Risk Management by email that the employee has already completed the training. Proof of completion will be retained on the employee’s personnel file.

Campus Violence and Harassment, Human Rights and AODA, WHMIS, and Privacy Training must also be completed within one week of commencing employment. All mandatory training can be accessed through Blackboard on the MyTrent Learning System:

Note: Students/staff that have a staff email account set up, are automatically enrolled in the mandatory training listed above. Those that do not have a staff email account, must email Risk Management to be manually enrolled.
