Accessibility & Unique Needs in Residence

We want to help you achieve academic and personal success by creating a comfortable and supportive environment. That’s why we take accessibility needs in residence requests seriously. There is a shared responsibility for working through this process, and we look forward to working with you.

Room assignments are performed based on a first come, first served system. In the event that a student requires a specific accessibility need in residence, based on pre-existing circumstances that requires individualized consideration during the assignment process, an Accessibility Needs in Residence Request form and supporting documentation is required by the application deadline.

We make every effort to accommodate student needs, and take into account information that is shared on accessibility needs in residence request forms. We cannot guarantee specific room types or locations but will ensure that reasonable accommodations are provided based on documented needs.

How to complete an Accessibility & Unique Needs in Residence Request form

Students seeking specific accessibility needs in residence for pre-existing circumstances should complete the accommodation request form on the Housing Services Portal as step 4 in the application process, and forward any supporting documentation (e.g. medical documentation) on their residence application page on the Housing portal before the application deadline.

Please note that while medical documentation is required for disability or medical need accessibility requests, disclosure of the diagnosis is not required. Housing Services will need information regarding the existence of a disability or medical need and the details of the functional limitations.

Deadline

Accessibility Needs in Residence Request forms along with all residence application requirements are due no later than June 3, 2019 at 11:59pm for new students, in order to be considered for the accessibility needs in residence room assignment process in advance of the general room self-selection process.

As room assignments for accessibility needs requests are done in advance of the general self-selection process, any late request forms can only be accommodated if space allows. Students that apply after the June 3, 2019 at 11:59pm for new students will be placed on the waitlist.

Once on the waitlist, should a room become available for the student, an offer for a room will be made. In some circumstances rooms that are available at the time may be an interim solution and may be provided as an alternative or next best accommodation until the most appropriate accommodation is available.

Room assignments

Room assignments for accessibility needs in residence requests are done in advance of the general self-selection process. All room assignments, including assignments that are made as part of the room transfer process, are subject to the applicable residence fee for the room type and location assigned.

Students applying after the deadline of June 3, 2019 at 11:59pm will be placed on the waitlist.

What if I have a temporary accessibility need?

We know that at times students require an accommodation for a temporary circumstance (e.g broken limbs). Should this occur, please contact Housing Services (residence@trentu.ca) and complete the accessibility needs in residence request form which is in residence application on the Housing Services Portal, including forwarding your supporting documentation as soon as possible.

In the event that a room transfer is required as part of the accessibility need in residence, pending availability, the change will be made permanently for the remainder of the academic year, and the assignment will be subject to the applicable residence fee for the room type and location assigned.
