Trent University Secures Over $450K in Funding from BHER for Student Placements Impacting Local Economies and Communities

The Trent Community Research Centre (TCRC) at Trent University has secured $483,822 in funding in partnership with the Business + Higher Education Roundtable (BHER), and with support from the Government of Canada to create new community-based research projects and community-service learning opportunities focused on sustainability, climate change, and a net-zero economy.

In addition to providing new learning opportunities for students, the funding will also be used to create a new capstone course focused on financial markets and institutions within Trent's School of Business.

“At Trent, we are always looking for opportunities to unite the best of industry and the learning journey of our students,” said Kevin Whitmore, director of Careerspace at Trent. “Through this funding, we will be able to continue developing relationships that lead to valuable community-based research and service-learning opportunities for students.”

Speaking of the partnership with Trent, BHER’s Andrew Bieler, Director of Partnerships and Experiential Learning stated, “We’re proud to collaborate with Trent to strengthen talent pipelines for municipalities, conservation agencies, not-for-profits, and small businesses undertaking the net zero transition in Eastern Ontario. The energy and commitment to build talent for green jobs in this region is more critical than ever.”

Through community-based research and community-service learning, students at Trent University are empowered to make a meaningful impact by addressing real-world challenges related to sustainability, climate change, and a net-zero economy. The partnership between TCRC and BHER fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, knowledge exchange, and innovation, paving the way for practical solutions and a more sustainable future.
