Forensic Science Grad Seizes Every Opportunity
With ambitions to one day work for the Centre of Forensic Science in Toronto, Jaycee Morrison is well on her way, ever mindful to give credit to her alma mater, Trent, where her passion for forensics took root.
“The smaller program size and being taught by the same set of faculty through all four years really allowed me to excel,” says the Thornhill native who recently attained her Masters of Science in Forensic Science after also completing her undergrad in Forensics in 2018.
“Every professor I’ve had has shaped me in some way, whether it’s giving advice, helping with class or writing reference letters.”
Over this past summer, Ms. Morrison did a placement with the Canada Border Service Agency, specifically in its Alcohol, Tobacco and Cannabis Section. The experience led to her being offered a starting chemist position, working on projects and casework related to cannabis products.
Noting that position typically has some 200 applicants in line, Ms. Morrison says the placement opportunity provided by her program proved key in her securing the position.
“Take full advantage of every opportunity that crosses your path because you never know what will help you in the future,” advises Ms. Morrison.
“Sign up for placement courses, and thesis courses if they are offered, apply for scholarships or research awards, and talk to your professors and ask about opportunities they have. Push yourself outside your comfort zone and keep an open mind.”
While a position with the Centre of Forensic Science is her ultimate goal, Ms. Morrison is confident that goal is well within reach – a confidence anchored by her Trent experience.
“I really feel like my combination of experiences has given me a unique edge over other potential applicants,” she says, adding her time at Ontario’s top-ranked undergraduate university made her “a better person with a great work ethic”.
