Get Rewarded for Walking to Work: Trent Alumna’s Mobile App Allows Users to get Discounts at Local Businesses For Green Acts
Looking for ways to be more eco-friendly and get rewarded with some practical benefits like discounts at local businesses? Trent alumna Jessica Correa ’10 has launched a new mobile app that does just that.
The Random Acts of Green mobile app, which recently received $200,000 in federal funding through Canada's Climate Action Fund, allows you to self-report on about 40 green activities such as taking quick showers, using public transit or walking to work. Users are then rewarded with “green points” for discounts on products and services at places such as Boston Pizza Peterborough, Healthy Planet Peterborough and Treetop Trekking Ganaraska.
The app was created by Random Acts of Green (RAOG) – a company that Ms. Correa dreamed up when she was studying at Trent for her Masters of Art in Sustainability Studies.
She recalls the idea coming to her while researching for a paper on how to build an online community and online branding. She yearned for the public to do more to combat climate change and she had a “Eureka moment” when she woke up one morning.
Ms. Correa, the RAOG founder and CEO, launched the social enterprise a few years ago and then launched the new app in October, 2018.
People across Canada, and even a few in the U.S., have already downloaded the app and are collecting points, although the primary base of users are in Peterborough.
Ms. Correa says the federal funding will allow RAOG to improve the app and help spread awareness further across the nation so everyone can pitch in to be more eco-friendly.
