
Dr. Christopher Dummitt '92
Dr. Christopher Dummitt is a historian of Canadian culture and politics and a frequent commentator on history and current affairs. An Associate Professor in Trent’s School for the Study of Canada, he also teaches in the History MA program.
His most recent book, Unbuttoned: A History of Mackenzie King’s Secret Life was published in May 2017 and has earned critical acclaim in newspapers across the country. He is the author and editor of two other books and is currently writing a new book on the history of political correctness.
Professor Dummitt is a Trent University alumnus having received a B.A. in History in 1996. He went on to earn a M.A. in History at Dalhousie University in 1997 and a Ph.D. in History at Simon Fraser University in 2004. Previously Dr. Dummitt was a lecturer at the University of London. In 2011 he was the Visiting Professor Canadian Studies at the Free University’s John F Kennedy Institute for North American Studies in Berlin.
In 2016 he co-created the Canada 150 project Canadian Difference to help spur critical discussion of the nation at this important anniversary. He sits on the editorial board of the Journal of the Canadian Historical Association and is past Chair of Trent’s Department of Canadian Studies (2014-2015).
Dr. Dummitt’s two-year term in a faculty seat on the Board of Governors began July 1, 2017.
