Materials Science M.Sc.

From nanotechnology to biomaterials, Materials Scientists develop new materials and techniques, and improve existing ones. To meet the demand for researchers and scientists in this field, Trent University and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology jointly offer innovative, interdisciplinary M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs, focusing on the fundamental science of materials. 

Designed for graduates of science programs who want a career in interdisciplinary research, the M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in Materials Science will develop knowledge and research experience at the interface of chemistry, physics, biology, and engineering. Our program emphasizes core science and an emphasis on the development of science communication skills. This program will also engage students in hands-on, fundamental materials research.  The focus on basic science will give graduates the flexibility to stay on top of their field and move into emerging areas of research.

Intellectual development

The graduate program in Materials Science offers:

  • Depth — students will acquire an interdisciplinary understanding of the fundamental scientific principles, analysis techniques, and research design methodologies that are required for both practice and advanced study in the field of Materials Science.

This program will be attractive to students interested in exploring opportunites in industry, the public sector, or research and development. Applicants to the M.Sc. program will normally have a B.Sc. degree in an applicable discipline, such as Chemistry, Physics, or a closely related Engineering degree such as Chemical Engineering or Engineering Physics. The suitability of the applicant’s background will be assessed on a case by case basis.
