Communications and Critical Thinking

Prepare yourself for a long and satisfying career with this three-year degree program, exclusive to Trent University's Durham Greater Toronto Area campus, which encourages you to develop transferable skills, prized by employers. The program combines required courses – in project management, writing, research, and numeracy – with others (selected by you) from a variety of other programs on campus. You’ll learn to become a creative, logical, and integrative thinker and a clear communicator. You’ll also have a chance to test your abilities in the program’s experiential learning capstone course, working on a meaningful community-based research project.

The program’s capstone research project changes each year. In 2017/18, students will be working with the Region of Durham to develop environmental policy options and communication strategies that will have real impact on our community.

In your required courses, you’ll learn to respond to complex questions by drawing on, integrating, and responding to high-level research from a variety of academic fields. What does it take to be happy? How is technology changing who we are and what we do? Why are numbers crucial for understanding our most fundamental issues? How do words change the world? As important as the answers are to these questions, just as important are the ways they are answered, with diligent research, agile thinking, and focused communication. This program will help you acquire and refine these essential skills, including your ability to collaborate with others, analyze complex problems, create and manage workable and ambitious projects, and communicate persuasively and clearly.
