Lieutenant Governor of Ontario Discovers How Trent University & Community Show Support
The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, recently spent some time in Peterborough to find out how local businesses and tourist destinations responded to the realities of COVID-19. Stopping by for a chat at the Silver Bean Café, the Crown’s representative in Ontario also discovered how students from the First Peoples House of Learning (FPHL) at Trent University have risen to the occasion.
“What an honour it was to spend some time with the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario,” said Dr. Dawn Lavell-Harvard, director of the FPHL, who was on hand for the visit. “She was really interested in how our students are coping, if they are returning in the fall and the special measures that Trent is taking to ensure that they are safe and still building community.”
During the conversation, Dr. Lavell-Harvard also highlighted the success of an online peer support platform designed by students at the FPHL to keep connected during the pandemic. She shared that the initiative resulted in a 50% increase in students accessing services over the summer.
“I am very proud of what our students have been able to accomplish this summer and look forward to having Her Honour come back to Trent,” Dr. Lavell-Harvard said.
