Working Tirelessly for First Peoples House of Learning
As a cultural advisor and Indigenous counsellor with First Peoples House of Learning (FPHL), Betty Carr-Braint seems to have boundless energy to dedicate to the diverse portfolio of programs and services that she offers to our Trent community. She reflects on her role noting:
“I believe my work is a work of the heart. And I think its important work when we’re all in an institution that focuses on the intellect – we need heart, too. And I’m proud to carry that forward.”
Ms. Carr-Braint provides counselling support and traditional cultural experiences for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students while also working with Elders to provide support and teachings across all degree programs. Ms. Carr-Braint coordinates the Traditional Area, which includes a sweat lodge, wigwam, tipi, and medicine garden, where FPHL hosts social fires, elder talks, and special programming open to all departments. Ms. Carr-Braint is the lead organizer for Trent’s annual Elder’s Gathering and this past term, she along with her colleagues undertook a ground-breaking initiative to offer the KAIROS Blanket Exercise to all first year students. Ms. Carr-Braint is inspired by the opportunity to help students remember who they are through ceremony, time on the land, and heart-centered learning. She continues to be a passionate advocate for Indigenous knowledges and equity, as well as personal and inter-personal healing here at Trent.
