Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers Awarded to Director of Trent's First Peoples House of Learning
In recognition for her contributions to the community, Dawn Lavell-Harvard, director of the First Peoples House of Learning at Trent, was recently awarded the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada.
An advocate for Indigenous women's rights, Ms. Lavell-Harvard described the environment at Trent as the perfect fit for her work as an activist in the community.
“People at Trent, especially our students, believe so strongly in what we are doing and that is really key - the great movements for social justice, and societal change are led by those who have a true passion, a passion that sustains them when the going gets tough. It’s that passion that keeps hope alive,” she said.
The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers recognizes the exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians from across the country in a wide range of fields. Candidates must have demonstrated an exemplary commitment through their dedicated volunteerism to receive the award.
