We put the "care" back in Caretaking
The Caretaking Department is responsible for providing a clean, safe interior environment for all students, visitors and staff. The Caretaking Department has 60 staff members and provides service from 4:00 a.m. until midnight, Sunday through Saturday. Caretaking services consist of routine and special functions cleaning. Requests for weekend and special functions cleaning should be requested and confirmed by the Caretaking Department, at least one week prior to the day the services are required.
Frequency of cleaning in student rooms is 3 times per year (both reading breaks and at Christmas). If extra cleaning is required or damage is noted on the checklist by the Caretaking Staff, students shall be held accountable and will be charged accordingly.
With the exception of Gzowski College, all washrooms in residence areas are cleaned daily. Cleaning of Gzowski College residence washrooms are the responsibility of the students and the students will be charged if the washrooms have not been maintained. The Caretaking Department does go in and do a thorough cleaning of the Gzowski College residence washrooms 3 times per year (both reading breaks and at Christmas). Hallways and stairwells are cleaned 2 times per week.
Faculty and staff offices are cleaned every 2 weeks, which includes the emptying of the garbage. Recycling must be taken to the internal building recycling stations by the occupant of the office.
Classrooms, lecture halls and teaching labs, etc. are cleaned on a daily basis, which includes the floor, spot cleaning walls, emptying waste receptacles, cleaning of chalk boards and a thorough cleaning 1 time per year.
Recycling depots are available at all Colleges and a program pamphlet is distributed to all students in residence outlining all items which are recyclable. The Students in residence are responsible for the garbage and recycling generated in their rooms and must take it to the main depots located at the College. Trent University does not allow batteries, fluorescent tubes or old computers to be discarded and shipped to landfill and special arrangements can be made through Facilities Management.
Caretaking services are also responsible for Pest Control and provide regular service at each building once a month or more if required. Window cleaning is a service we contract out and is provided once per year.
