ESL Levels

Foundations for ESL

Foundations for ESL, or “prep” is the most basic level of the Trent-ESL program.
Students in prep arrive with little to no English ability. (24 hours a week from September to April)

Core English

Core English consists of three full levels, Levels 1-3 or ESL 1, ESL 2, ESL 3.
This is where most language is learned: through vocabulary, grammar, listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, and writing skills areas. (24 hours a week from September to April)

Foundations for University

Foundations for University consists of two levels, Foundations I and Foundations II, also called ESL 4 and ESL 5 for final preparation for university study.
You will focus on research, academic writing, presentation skills, reading, critical thinking and communication.
Foundations I: 24.5 hours a week from September to April
Foundations II: 18.5 hours a week from September to April
