Emphasis in Education
The Emphasis in Teacher Education is available to students in a Single or Joint Honours Program at Trent who are preparing to teach at the Elementary or Secondary level, and who plan to apply to a consecutive teacher education program upon completion of their Honours degree. The emphasis provides students with the academic foundations to pursue a Bachelor of Education and a teaching career.
The Emphasis does not guarantee admission to any Consecutive B.Ed. program; however, the transcripts of students graduating with an Honours degree, who have successfully completed the requirements of the Emphasis, will contain the notation "with an Emphasis in Teacher Education." Students must have a cumulative average of 70% at the end of their final year to graduate with the Emphasis designation.
Registration
Accessing Emphasis in Education Blackboard Page
Completing an Emphasis in Education simply requires a student to take the necessary courses as described in the next section below over the duration of an undergraduate program. There is no ongoing registration in the program; as long as all program elements are completed by graduation, the student will receive the “Emphasis in Education” notation on their transcript (providing the student indicates this request at the time s/he applies to graduate).
However, although not required, we do recommend that those pursuing an Emphasis in Education register on the Emphasis in Education Blackboard page each year in order to stay in touch with program regulations and to be connected to other announcements related to the program.
In order to do so, please follow these steps to register on the Blackboard page for the Emphasis in Education:
- Log into the Blackboard Learning System (through your myTrent portal).
- Click on the tab "Community" on the top menu bar.
- There should be an "Organization Search" box on the left side; enter "TES/Emphasis" in the box and click "Go".
- Scroll over the words "EDUC-EMPHASIS" under the header "Organization ID" and click the 'down arrow' button that appears to the right of those words.
- Click on the word "Enroll" from that drop-down menu to be enrolled.
Program Overview
Course requirements for this program vary by teaching division. Please see the Academic Calendar for course descriptions (descriptions are listed under the department offering the course). Students must meet the requirements for their teaching division, as well as the requirements for their chosen Honours degree. Requirements for all degrees are listed on page 10 of the Academic Calendar. Students will benefit from an ongoing academic review by the Program Coordinator.
Elementary Stream
Students in the elementary stream take 5.0 credits in Curriculum and Foundational Studies as part of their Honours degree. For Curriculum Studies, students need 1.0 credit in Math or Science and 1.0 credit in Visual or Performing Arts. The Math or Science credit may consist of any course from Math, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental and Resource Science, Physical Geography or Physics (PSYC 2016H and PSYC 2017H together will meet the Mathematics requirement). Students may choose to take one of ERSC-BIOL 2700Y, Math 2080Y or PHYS 2090Y, which are designed for students intending to teach at the elementary level who lack a science or mathematics background.
To fulfill the requirement for a credit in Visual or Performing Arts students can choose from the following list:

Students have the option of taking EDUC 4000Y which includes working in a school with students with special needs for one half-day per week, as well as course work focused on literacy.
Secondary Stream
Students in the secondary stream must complete the requirements for two teaching subjects recognized by the Ontario College of Teachers. The teaching subjects available in the Trent Consecutive Bachelor of Education include Biology, Chemistry, Computer Studies, Dramatic Arts, English, French (Second Language), Geography, Health and Physical Education, History, Native Studies, Mathematics, Physics and Visual Arts. Students need to complete 5.0 credits in their first teaching subject and 3.0 credits in their second teaching subject (please note that students wishing to have French as a second teaching subject must complete 4.0 credits).
Students in the secondary stream must also complete 2.0 credits in foundational studies from the list above, as well as EDUC 4000Y (which includes working in a school with students with special needs for a half-day per week and course work focused on literacy), or one additional credit in foundational studies if EDUC 4000Y is not taken.
Students in the Emphasis program in both the elementary and secondary streams have additional opportunities to gain valuable experiences and insights for the teaching profession. Workshops are held throughout the year which address current issues in education. Students also have the opportunity to participate in programs on campus including Pen Pals, Impact Leadership, Frontier College, Peer Mentoring and more. Check out the list of student organizations on campus.
