Master of Management Student Lands Paid Internship Thanks to Guest Speaker in Marketing Class
You never know when the chance of a lifetime will walk through the door. In this case, a paid internship accompanied an invited guest speaker to Gurpreet Dhaliwal’s marketing class at Trent University Durham GTA.
Now, the Master of Management student can gain valuable business experience and a coveted edge while furthering her education.
Business launch
Before coming to Trent, Ms. Dhaliwal worked as an analyst in the health care industry. She enrolled in the Master of Management graduate program at Trent Durham to add business knowledge to her science and healthcare background in order to advance her career.
“The program benefited me greatly,” reflects Ms. Dhaliwal. “I have been introduced to business concepts and learned from various guest speakers about their experiences. They provide insights into what happens in the real workforce.”
She also chose the 16-month program because of its work placement component.
The rest is marketing magic
Dr. Ken Chen, professor with Trent’s School of Business, recently invited a guest speaker from TEVA Canada to share his experiences with Ms. Dhaliwal’s marketing class. He mentioned to Professor Chen that the company, which produces generic medicine, specialty medicine and biopharmaceuticals, had an availability on its marketing team. Professor Chen subsequently posted the position for his class.
After applying and interviewing, Ms. Dhaliwal landed the internship.
“It felt great to receive such an opportunity, especially so early in the program.”
She begins the internship this spring and plans to learn more about marketing in the industry and the different business processes involved. She will work with diverse teams including supply chain, design and product development.
“I will be able to apply my theory to the job because I am attending class and working. I will be even more prepared once I graduate.”
She feels that all students should take advantage of opportunities and connections at Trent Durham.
“They can lead to full-time jobs and even life-long careers. These are stepping stones for students who need work experience or want to work in a different industry before they graduate.”
With plans to take on more senior managerial roles after graduation, Ms. Dhaliwal predicts, “I will stand out and be able to lead a successful career in the corporate sector.”
