Trent Durham GTA Builds on Long Legacy of Community Commitment in the City of Oshawa
Trent University Durham GTA called the City of Oshawa home since 1975. Over the past 45 years, a lot has changed for the University but our commitment to contributing to the positive growth in the City of Oshawa and the entire Region of Durham has remained consistent.
“Trent University Durham is thrilled to be a growing contributor to the City of Oshawa and the wider Region,” said Trent University Durham Dean and Head Dr. Scott Henderson. “Our growth has been remarkable, with our student population nearly doubling in the past six years. We are excited for what the future holds.”
The City of Oshawa recently revealed it set six new building records in 2019. Among the major projects is Trent Durham’s six-story residence and academic building, opening fall 2020. Trent Durham is proud to invest in the future of students in the City of Oshawa.
Highly anticipated by students, faculty, and staff, the much-needed campus expansion has the community excited for the addition of this new, contemporary space.
With the creation of 200 new residence beds, modern academic space featuring a 100-seat tiered lecture hall and two 64-seat classrooms, plus a central green courtyard, Trent Durham’s new building will create dynamic space for the entire Oshawa community to enjoy.
In addition to the new building on campus, Trent Durham continues to develop inventive academic programming, which is proving to be a big draw for students. Through collaboration with community partners, Trent Durham has developed programs that respond directly to current job market trends and community needs, including: Policing & Community Well-Being, Masters in Management, and Journalism & Creative Writing. Preparing students for careers that directly meet the needs of the community and local economy benefits both the students and local employers.
Equipping graduates with the skills and experience required to be successful in their chosen careers is a hallmark of the Trent Durham experience. Community partnerships also help to bring career-boosting experiences to our students through placements, internships and research opportunities. With over 250 students placed since 2016, Trent Durham students have gained valuable work experience, and brought their fresh perspective and energy to a variety of industries in Durham Region.
Being located within the GTA, with easy access in and around Durham Region, allows Trent Durham students many opportunities to get involved with a wide range of businesses and organizations across the community.
“The innovative new programs, together with our continued commitment to providing experiential opportunities to students allow Durham-based students to study close to home while furthering their own career prospects,” said Dr. Henderson.
"Programs such as Social Work, Child and Youth Studies, Teacher Education, and capstone courses offer young engaged volunteers to the community in much needed fields. These programs also provide the City and Region with high quality research to inform decision making for years to come," said Nick Ryan, Trent Durham Student Association president.
Trent Durham prides itself on creating partnerships and supporting growth in the City of Oshawa and across the entire Durham Region. With the opening of the new student residence, creation of new programs, and experiential learning opportunities, Trent Durham exemplifies the live here, learn here, thrive here mentality that makes the City of Oshawa a destination of choice.
Trent University Durham would like to thank the City of Oshawa and the Region of Durham for their support and investment of the expansion project.
