#FacesofTrentU: Creating Powerful, Positive Change through Literacy
“I believe that in order to create positive change in the world, we need to start with children and youth. Through my placement with the Oshawa Public Library, I work with a range of kids and families from various academic backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, races, and abilities, which I hope will give me a better understanding of people. When I’m given the opportunity to interact with different kinds of people, it allows me to understand others more and think deeper about how I can develop meaningful connections with people who are different from me.”
Through a placement with the Oshawa Public Libraries, at both the Delpark and McLaughlin branches. At the Delpark branch, fourth-year Child & Youth Studies student Devni Gamage works with Grade 2 and 3 students on their reading skills by playing literacy games, reading books and other activities. At the McLaughlin branch, Ms. Gamage also works with teenagers by assisting the Teen Advisory Group with planning programs and events.
“What I enjoy most about my placement is seeing my students’ progress. It’s so rewarding to see that my efforts have made a difference in people’s lives. I also cherish the relationships and connections I have made with others.”
