Jarret Leaman Honoured with Trent University Young Alumni Leader Award
The Trent University Alumni Association has presented Jarret Leaman ’05 with the Trent University Young Alumni Leader Award at a special ceremony at Trent University Durham GTA. The award recognizes Mr. Leaman’s dedication to the Indigenous and LGBT2S communities and the tremendous leadership he shows acting as an advocate.
“I feel so grateful to receive this honour from an educational institution that shaped me greatly,” said Mr. Leaman of the award. “I am still benefiting from my education and experience at Trent today. Volunteerism and personal investment in your community is critical to growth, and I credit my Trent undergraduate experience.”
Mr. Leaman is currently the director of philanthropy and business development for Troon Technologies and the founder of the Centre for Indigenous Innovation and Technology. He is also a successful entrepreneur with his own business, Ayaabe Management, where he works with and represents Indigenous talent in the entertainment industry.
“Trent alumni have an incredible knack for finding gaps where leadership is needed and then lending their energy and expertise,” said Lee Hays, director of Trent University Alumni Engagement and Services. “Jarret has proven this over and over again, first at Trent and now at the national level.”
Previously, Mr. Leaman was the senior administrative officer at the Aboriginal Institutes Consortium (AIC), a non-profit membership organization that comprises nine Aboriginal-controlled post-secondary education and training institutes in Ontario.
As a volunteer, he remains equally active: he currently sits on the board of governors for OCAD University; he is a board member on the Ontario Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce; Mr. Leaman is a committee member on the Governor General’s Leadership Program; and he is a community council program member for Aboriginal Leadership Services.
Mr. Leaman is an active national speaker on two-spirited and LGBTQ issues. He has worked to fight stigma and educate Indigenous youth and communities across Canada.
The Trent University Young Alumni Leader Award is just the latest reflection of Mr. Leaman’s dedication and hard work. His efforts have led to numerous awards and accolades, including: receiving the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers from the Governor General of Canada; being selected to participate in the Governor General’s Canadian Leadership Program; being nominated for the Ontario NDP J.S. Woodsworth Awards Youth Award; being recognized as one of Huffington Posts’ Young Aboriginal Canadians to Watch; and more.
