New Degree/Diploma Program to Train the Next Generation of Career-Ready Journalists
A new degree/diploma program at Trent University Durham GTA and Durham College is poised to answer the call for the next generation of journalists, preparing graduates with the practical media production experience and crucial communications skills needed to be successful in today’s content-driven world.
The new integrated Journalism and Creative Writing program offers students the opportunity to develop career-based skills in journalism, social media and content creation. Students graduate with both a Bachelor of Arts degree in Media Studies from Trent University and a diploma in Journalism - Mass Media from Durham College – all in just four years. Applications are now being accepted for a September 2020 start.
In addition to critical thinking and writing skills developed at Trent University, students will build a strong portfolio of work and gain hands-on experience in Durham College’s ‘working newsroom’ and a variety of writing workshops. They will also gain valuable career experience through a seven-week field placement, working with top media outlets including Global, CBC, CTV News, Metroland, and more.
“We are preparing students for their future literary livelihoods,” explains Dr. Ihor Junyk, director of the new Journalism and Creative Writing program at Trent University Durham GTA. “By combining Trent’s expertise in interdisciplinary study with a focus on both critical and creative work, and Durham College’s expertise in media content creation for multiple platforms, we hope to give the next generation of writers and journalists the skills they need to thrive in the changing media landscape.”
This program responds to the ways that journalism is changing and the job market’s growing demand for savvy communications professionals who can contribute to the success of a variety of businesses and organizations. Graduates are expected to secure roles within traditional media outlets, as well as cultural organizations, major corporations and a variety of public and private sector employers.
“This partnership has been designed to create sought-after graduates poised to make an impact on their community and the world,” says Teresa Goff, Durham College Journalism professor and academic liaison for the Journalism and Creative Writing program. “Not only will students engage in deep thinking at Trent and develop journalistic core competencies such as writing, editing and communicating on multiple platforms here at DC, our graduates will have the chance to work with organizations here and abroad to develop and hone their media and content creation skills. This unique learning opportunity will prepare graduates for meaningful careers in a variety of professional organizations.”
Applications are now being accepted for this program, which will welcome its first cohort of students in fall 2020. Learn more at trentu.ca/futurestudents/journalism.
