Humans are the only surviving species of the genus Homo, but we know about several extinct ones, including Homo naledi. Its fossils came to light in South Africa just five years ago, showing a surprisingly small brain and recent age. Our genus shows great diversity in morphology (body shape), fueling scientific debate about its origin and evolution. Recent fossil discoveries, such as Homo naledi, have further expanded the observed range of morphological variation, raising new questions about why body parts evolve at different rates. This presentation explores the diversity of skulls within Homo and evolutionary processes that may have driven so much diversification and innovation.
All welcome to attend!
