2021 Graduates FAQs
What is the difference between ‘graduation’ and ‘convocation’?
Graduation is the term used to acknowledge that you have met your degree requirements and you have been approved by Senate to graduate from the program. Convocation refers to the ceremony that celebrates this when the Chancellor confers the degree. Note that you MUST apply to graduate to confirm that you have met your degree requirements, be approved to graduate and get your degree parchment. You still graduate without attending convocation.
What are the plans to celebrate the achievements of 2021 graduates?
On Saturday, June 12, 2021, Trent will host a special online celebration to celebrate you, our newest Trent graduates. Moving our Peterborough and Durham GTA celebrations to a virtual platform allows us to mark this milestone accomplishment for our graduates (and celebrate with you), while also prioritizing the health and safety of our students and our communities. We will do everything we can to create a memorable virtual celebration that will recognize your hard work and success. Further details will be announced in the coming weeks. Be sure to check trentu.ca/convocation for updates.
Can I still get graduation photos?
Graduation photos are still being offered for all Trent campuses and are a wonderful memento of your years of hard work. The following companies have contracts with the student associations. They have a full supply of Trent’s unique gowns and hoods and offer props such as scrolls, flowers or hats (note that hats are NOT worn at Trent convocation ceremonies but you can have a photo in one if you wish).
Trent Peterborough Symons Campus
Photos are taken by Miranda Studios. They are a local Peterborough business so they offer either in-studio or on-campus appointments all year. Contact them to book an appointment: (705) 742-8338; email firstname.lastname@example.org; web site: www.mirandastudios.ca
Trent Durham GTA and George Brown Nursing
Photos are taken by New Paramount Studios, Toll-Free number: 1-877-677-1930. They normally come to campus to take photos so contact them to find out the current arrangements. For Durham GTA you can also contact the Trent Durham Student Association (TDSA) at email@example.com.
Can I rent regalia to take photos?
The Conference & Hospitality department suspended renting gowns and hoods for April due to new provincial restrictions. Booking may resume on May 6, 2021, if permitted.
Will there still be a yearbook and how can I get my photo in it?
The Trent Annual yearbook is created and managed by Peterborough students (it only collects fees from Peterborough students so is not available for Durham or George Brown students). They will still be creating a yearbook for 2020-2021. To have your formal graduation photo appear in it you must have your in-studio photo done by Miranda Studios. Due to the current situation, they have extended the deadline to have your photos done to May 31. Contact the Trent Annual for more questions or Miranda Studios to book a photo appointment.
Where can I get a frame or gifts?
The Trent University Bookstore offers Trent-branded gifts and a few options of frames specifically for Trent degrees, with branded mats for Peterborough and Durham GTA. They are open on campus or order online.
What if I'm a Durham student or have a joint major?
You make this choice on the Application to Graduate under Graduation Group. Make a note of what you choose (in case you forget!). If you have forgotten, contact the Registrar's Office: firstname.lastname@example.org
Are there fall Convocation ceremonies?
No, Trent only holds Convocation in June. Everyone that graduated in the fall or January are encouraged to attend the June ceremonies and their names will be included in the program.
