What makes Otonabee College unique?
“OC is a community of supportive people that helped me navigate my time at Trent. The most unique thing about OC is the diversity and acceptance. It is home to many different majors and welcomes students at all different levels in their education journey such as first generation, mature, international students, etc.”
“I feel like OC creates a really unique close-knit community environment! The college is always hosting different events, celebrations and Stephanie [Otonabee College Principal] really makes an effort to not only connect with almost every single student or as many as she can, but also tries to make the OC office a safe place for students.”
“It is a close-knit community with a lot of history. My Mother was a part of Otonabee College as well, which is why it is close to my heart. They are always providing students with outlets, workshops, events, etc. to make their University experience worthwhile!”
“I feel that in Otonabee, the feeling of home and family is very easily created. I can honestly say that through my first 8 weeks at Trent University, I have made many new friends and feel very comfortable living with those I do. I feel that Otonabee College delivers something that I haven't heard from other students that feeling of belonging, self-expression and true belonging are well facilitated here and encouraged in our everyday activities.”
What does a day in Otonabee College look like?
You enter the college and immediately can smell the freshly brewed Tim Horton's coffee. Students pass by you smiling and waving as they make their way to class. Professors say hello and then hurry to their offices for office hours. You stop on your way to Wenjack Theatre to adore the groundhogs that play in the grass. Next thing you know, it is time for lunch and the Otonabee College Cabinet is out on the OC Patio barbequing. You remember that you still need to build your Winter term schedule and visit the College Office for help. Student staff welcome you and offer you a beverage before guiding you through the Visual Schedule Builder. Afterwards, you head up to the OC Commons to study before your next class. Student clubs and groups sit outside of the Dining Hall inviting you to their next event. You take a moment to admire your community, one full of friends that soon will feel like family.
In January 2020, we asked our students what they love about Otonabee College...this is what they had to say:
“I love that my college has the best personal connection that I have ever been able to establish within the university. Over my four years I have been a student that has been off campus and yet I couldn't feel closer to Trent. I love that OC is there to help me through it all. Whether it was a cup of tea before my advising appointment or a quick conversation when I stop by to refill my water bottle, OC has been there to brighten my spirits and keep me going through the toughest times of my university career. Not only is it a college but it is a family, and one that I will always affiliate myself with even when my time here is done.”
“I love everything from the people, to the mascot, to the merchandise. It makes me feel at home and welcomed and accepted which means a lot being so far away from home. When I first got to Trent, I did not know anyone else in the area. My college and orientation week really helped give me the confidence to put myself out there and meet new people.”
“I love that our college hosts many different events that encourage the members of the OC family to come out and participate. I love that the dons of OC are very polite and caring about our needs. I love that there hasn't been a moment where I haven't felt out of place. I believe OC has a little something for everyone, and that OC allows for everyone to shine or get involved in something that interests them.”
“Living in Otonabee has been an incredible experience. As a transfer student, I am able to compare my experiences between Ryerson University and Trent University. Trent has made me feel so much more like home. Otonabee is also unique with the name of our college as well. Trent is extremely aware of aboriginal people and reinforces this consistently. Otonabee's motto, 'the times change, and we change along with them', is extremely relevant and important and has created such a large amazing impact on myself, and others.”
