Signs of Fall: Traditional College Weekends Return to Campus

Lady Eaton College and Champlain College mark fall college weekends with online games, campfires, and carnival games.

Fall college weekend is one of the longest standing traditions for Trent University’s colleges.

This year, students from Lady Eaton College (LEC) and Champlain College came together to host a variety of in-person and virtual events to help students connect with their collegiate communities, and each other.

“Fall college weekend is a great way to get to know our members, outside of the classroom,” said Tina Fridgen, principal of Champlain College. “Every year we work hard to offer a diversity of events in collaboration with the College Cabinet, the Outdoors Club, the Peterborough Rowing Club and our Trent International team.”

Trent’s colleges focus on providing a connecting point for the student experience. After a year where many students studied remotely, students were eager to connect again in-person. With over 300 students attending the weekend in person, the weekend provided an opportunity for students to connect outside of the classroom and to engage with

"The planning process for this fall college weekend was so special because I was able to listen to what type of events students wanted to see, and make it happen,” said Abby Richards, college ambassador for Lady Eaton College. “It was the first big in-person event that I have organized since our return to campus and being able to plan ways that would meaningfully connect students with each other safely and while having fun was so rewarding!”

Last year, Trent’s colleges introduced students to online, virtual versions of college weekends. When it came to plan this year, maintaining a virtual component was a given.

“It’s amazing having students back on campus this year. Seeing students laughing together, having a good time, and building their college community by meeting other students is just so special,” said Dr. Christine Freeman-Roth, principal of Lady Eaton College. “But continuing to offer some of our activities online allows students who live off-campus or who are unable to attend in person to enjoy the college experience in a truly unique way.”

Students interested in attending future college events can find a detailed listing through their college’s website.
