Jumpstart Your Career with this New Virtual Resource
Hands-on learning is a critical component of the student experience at Trent University, and now students can better prepare for real-world career opportunities with a new virtual resource.
Developed by Careerspace, The Career and Workforce Readiness course will help students prepare for their first job or work-integrated learning experience by introducing them to essential workplace knowledge and professional skills.
“Our office and the programs we offer exist to give students the career development tools they need for success and this course our newest approach,” says Kevin Whitmore, director of Careerspace. “Through conversations with students, we learned that there is a desire for a resource that prepares them for the workforce, specifically something that they can do online and at their own pace.”
Handy tools and career-boosting resources
The open-access, six-module course includes several interactive components, including a skills identification tool to help students identify their unique skill set, an important piece to highlight when compiling a resume and cover letters. Students are also equipped with interview and networking skills, and a foundation of workplace communication skills and professionalism.
Input from experts in the field
“At the onset of this project, we set up an advisory committee that included several community partners to get their input on content and activities to include in the resource and to review each module as we develop them,” shares Hannah Neff, career resource advisor at Careerspace. “We then involved students in the review process and used their feedback to package the course in a self-serve, easy-to-access format.”
The advisory committee included experts from Agilec, Workforce Development Board, and the City of Kawartha Lakes, as well as faculty and Careerspace placement coordinators from both the Durham GTA and Symons campuses.
Project leader Deanna Di Vito worked alongside subject matter experts from Careerspace and content developer Tara Beaton to bring together this comprehensive resource for students. Trent Online also provided invaluable support in developing the online course.
