Employers Internships

Are you interested in hosting an Internship?

Program Overview

An internship is an opportunity where fourth year students with a 75% or higher average gain a discipline-specific, supervised experience in a professional work environment for an extended period of time. Internships include an academic credit. Internships are a break from academic studies. Internships are a full-time paid position for 6, 8 or 12 months. Students return to Trent for a final academic term after the internship is completed.

Internships begin in January or September. Job postings for January internships are due in early September, with interviews taking place in late September. Job postings for September internships are due in early May, with interviews taking place in late May.

Types of Internships

  • An internship can be in any field of business – accounting, HR, marketing, finance, management
  • An internship can be anywhere in Ontario (Peterborough, Port Hope, Lindsay, Ottawa, Kingston, Belleville, Trenton, Oshawa, Toronto, Markham, Barrie) or throughout Canada

The benefits of hosting and hiring a student intern include:

  • Access to bright, talented, and motivated students.

  • Meet your company needs for work tasks or special projects.

  • Build your brand as students bring current knowledge and new perspectives.

  • Evaluate the students as future permanent employees.

  • Partner with a dedicated School of Business team that is committed to prompt and responsible service to both students and employers.

  • You will have the choice to offer a 6, 8, or 12-month full time paid internship.

Employer criteria and responsibilities:

  • organizations will create a job posting including salary, review resumes, interview students, and decide who they wish to hire.

  • Internships are normally in-person.

  • Minimum 35 hours per week paid employment.

  • There will be some administrative paperwork that the university will require of each host employer at the beginning of each internship.

  • Organizations will assign a supervisor for each internship.

  • The supervisor will evaluate student performance throughout the internship including a mid-point and final performance evaluation.

  • Eligible Ontario based employers may receive a Co-operative Education Tax Credit if the internship is between 8 and 16 consecutive months of full-time productive, supervised work.
