Title: Sparta in the Cold War
Delivered by: Dr. Matthew Sears, University of New Brunswick
Description:
Sparta, especially the Three Hundred from the Battle of Thermopylae, played an outsized role in Cold War imagery and rhetoric, from political speeches to cinema. Unsettlingly, the common framing of the “West” as a bulwark against Bolshevik hordes from the “East” mirrors sentiments expressed by Hermann Göring to the Wehrmacht in 1943, which should force us to ponder anew not only the usefulness but also the danger of appealing to Spartan examples.
