War Without End? The Conflict over the Korean Peninsula Since 1945

This lecture will explore the historical roots of the present day conflict between North Korea and the United States, starting with the era of the Second World War in Asia and the Korean War. The talk will also highlight longer-term problems with the 1953 armistice, the cold war origins of the current nuclear crisis, and the history of the DPRK in the international system since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Dr. Steven Lee is associate professor of history at the University of British Columbia and Chair of the International Relations Program. His publications include Outposts of Empire: Korea, Vietnam and the Origins of the Cold War in Asia, 1949-1954 (McGill-Queen's, 1996) and The Korean
War (Longman, 2001).
