What is the award criteria?

The nomination form will ask you to answer the following question:

  • Present specific details about your experience with the candidate, providing clear examples that illustrate the ways in which he or she is an outstanding teacher who has made a distinctive impact on your learning and overall experience at Trent University.

What is the award and how is it determined?

The Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching is named for Professor T.H.B. Symons, the Founding President of Trent University, and is made available through the generous support of Professor and Mrs. Symons.

The Award ($1,500, a Symons liripipe and a framed citation) is presented each year to a member of the Trent faculty or staff (full-time or part-time) in recognition of outstanding teaching in the broadest sense and, in the words of Professor Symons, "exemplary concern for students."

The presentation of the Award is made each year at the Spring Convocation and is acknowledged in April at a celebration of Trent teaching excellence reception that is open to the university community.

The recipient of this award is determined by the Teaching Awards Sub-committee. Click here to read a letter from the 2010-2011 Chair of the Teaching Awards Subcommittee, which describes the selection process.
