Who may nominate?

Anyone internal or external to the Trent community who interacts with faculty and staff may submit a nomination.

As this award recognizes leadership and innovation that often takes place in locations other than the classroom, sustained contributions to the advancement of teaching may not be readily recognizable by students (who often witness the more public side of faculty members through their classroom instruction and individual contact outside of the classroom). This award, as a result, is well suited to peer or department nominations, as faculty are more aware of their colleagues' leadership and innovation.

What is the award criteria?

The nomination form will ask you to answer the following questions:

  • Describe the ways in which the candidate plays a leadership role in promoting effective teaching.  Such leadership may include curriculum or new program development.
  • Describe the effective methods that the candidate employs in teaching; use examples to illustrate the impact of those methods on student learning.
  • Provide examples of how the candidate communicates research on teaching and learning. Appropriate examples might include instances of some of the following:
    • guidance to faculty colleagues or students through one-on-one conversations
    • workshop leadership on teaching and learning topics
    • support of institutional teaching and learning initiatives
    • participation in provincial, national, or international conferences that have an emphasis on teaching and learning in higher education
    • receipt of grants for teaching and learning improvements
    • participation in the scholarship of teaching through research or publication

TIP: Information about a candidate’s participation in workshops that have been facilitated through Trent’s Instructional Development Centre and a candidate’s receipt of internal teaching and learning grants issued by the Instructional Development Centre may be provided upon request. Such requests should be made no later than November 8, 2011 to allow sufficient time for a response before the award deadline. To receive such information, please contact idc@trentu.ca.

What is the award and how is it determined?

The award has a monetary value of $750 and is accompanied by a framed certificate.

The award is announced at Senate and is presented at a celebration of teaching excellence in April. This ceremony is open to the university community.

The recipient of this award is determined by the Trent Teaching Awards Sub-committee.
