A Great University Town
A wonderful place for students to go to school – Peterborough has the energy, diversity and resources that make it an incredible university town. Trent’s home-town community is the Greater Peterborough Area. With a population of 76,000, the City of Peterborough is located in the Kawarthas – a region that is one of Ontario’s most desirable lake districts.
Trent University is also centrally located within Ontario. Peterborough is just a 90-minute drive from Toronto, three hours from Ottawa, and five hours from Montreal.

There are a number of great accommodations for visitors to Peterborough. Whether a quaint B & B, small inn, or larger hotel, many accommodations are located along the Otonabee River and are within close walking distance to downtown where boutiques, restaurants and outdoor trails await.
Arts and Culture
Peterborough is a vibrant, multicultural community that caters to the tastes of the many students living here. A 700-seat theatre, as well as and numerous other performance venues feature spectacular live entertainment. Art galleries, museums and historic sites add to the culture and vitality of the downtown core.

The Music Scene
Peterborough has a vibrant music scene, including rock, folk, skaw, blues and hip hop. Every year a host of bands, from the obscure to the famous, bring the city to life. Music festivals such as the September Downtown Jazz Festival attract big name headliners.
Shops and Boutiques
Peterborough – with its many shops, stores and boutiques – has everything from vintage clothing to the latest in electronics. Students can browse for treasures amongst the stacks in “booksellers’ row,” purchase handmade candles or soaps, hunt for beads from India, buy organic produce at the Farmer’s Market, or spend Saturday afternoon at one of the malls.
Places to Eat
Peterborough is host to outstanding ethnic cuisine – you’ll find everything from fast food to vegetarian fare.
More than 50 restaurants are within easy walking distance of each other downtown, boasting authentic Mexican, Indian, Italian, Greek, Japanese, Thai, Belgian, and new-world cuisine. Students can also find popular roadhouses and fast food restaurants, convenient for grabbing a quick bite.
Places to Play
The Otonabee River, part of the world-famous Trent-Severn Waterway, flows through Trent University’s Symons Campus. The Head of the Trent – Trent’s enormously popular homecoming event and one of the largest one-day rowing regattas in North America – takes place in the Fall.
Symons Campus has 20 kms (12.5 miles) of hiking trails.
Outdoor activities include rowing, canoeing, kayaking, golf, swimming, and skiing. The nearby Trans Canada and Rotary Greenway trails allow students to walk, in-line skate or bike through the city or to interesting sites. Open playing fields are available for pick-up games and intramural sports.
