Located on the Otonabee River, water is a part of our campus life at Trent University.  When looking at water on campus, we are typically considering two aspects.  One being how much water we use and how to minimize that environmental impact.  As well, we look at helping to address the unsustainable use of plastic water bottles.

Water Conservation

in 2008/2009 Trent saw a decrease of more than 20% in potable water use on campus over the previous year.  Many projects completed in the last few years that have contributed to our success in water conservation.   An added benefit of conserving water is that much of it is heated, so many of the changes that we are making also help to reduce our campus carbon footprint.  Some recent projects include:

  • library washroom renovations

  • Lady Eaton residence washroom renovations

  • On-going replacement of existing fixtures with lower consumption faucets, toilets and showerheads.

  • including low consumption fixtures in new buildings

  • minimal irrigation of grounds

  • native plantings of trees and herbaceous plants

  • education campaigns

Drinking Water on Campus

Over the last few years there has been increasing awareness about issues surrounding drinking water from single-use, plastic water bottles.  Water is available across campus in a number of different locations.  As well, we are working with a number of groups on campus including the TCSA, Sustainable Trent, the Bottle Water Action Group and CASSC on increasing the number of water filling stations on campus.
