I have previous experience working with children/youth/senior citizens. Do I still need to attend a training session?
Regardless of prior experience, all new volunteers are required to attend a Frontier College training session. At the training sessions we cover Frontier College policy and procedures and methods. Volunteers have the opportunity to meet each other, members of our organizational team and Regional Coordinator. Those with previous related experience will have the opportunity to share ideas and suggestions.
I do not have any related experience. Can I still volunteer with the program?
Previous experience is not required. However, volunteers should be enthusiastic, have an interest in working with children/youth/ senior citizens and be committed, responsible and reliable.
How many hours a week do I have to commit to the program?
In total, our volunteers spend approximately 2 hours per week volunteering. This includes tutoring or leading a circle for one hour a week plus travel and preparation time (e.g. planning an activity or tutoring session, obtaining books and materials needed for your session).
Is there a set tutoring program that volunteers follow?
No, tutors are responsible for planning and implementing activities based on their learners' needs and interests. However, members of the Organizational Team and the Regional Coordinator are available to offer support, ideas and suggestions.
What are reading circles and how do they work?
Each reading circle is different, but they all incorporate reading and literacy-related activities. The programs at the Peterborough Family Resource Centre (also known as the Antrim Centre) and Trent Child Care Centre work with pre-school aged children. It can be as simple as sitting and reading with a single child or a small group of children.
What is the Homework Club and how does it work?
The Homework Club at Prince of Wales School works with youth during school hours. Based on classroom needs, volunteers can expect a wide variety of activities including: working with a small group of children, working with an individual child or providing support for the teacher.
