The Sociology Program at Trent

Our curriculum provides a critical introduction to the theoretical approaches, research methods and substantive areas developed by sociologists to explain the social processes that structure our everyday
worlds. Students are encouraged to explorethe diverse cultures, dynamics of power,ocial experiences,complexities of social inequality and global social changes that forgerelations between individuals, groups and institutions. The Department’s faculty members are committed
teachers and active researchers, including three distinguished research and teaching award winners. Their expertise in gender, work, social
justice, media, religion, culture, sport, organizations, sexuality, ethnicity, family, health and other fields challenges students to discover their own sociological imagination as they aspire to graduate studies, international opportunities, or careers in teaching, research, business, social work, law, policy, government and the social service professions.

General Notes
* A standing of C- (60%) or higher in Sociology 1000Y is a prerequisite for all upper-year Sociology courses, with the exception of cross-listed courses, for which students should check the prerequisites.

* 3000- level courses are open to students who have completed five university courses including at least 1.0 credit Sociology at the 2000-level.

*4000- level courses are open to students who have completed ten university courses, of which at least two should be at the 3000- level. Students must complete Sociology 2150Y and soci-2110H (or 2100Y) before proceeding to 4000- level courses, with the possible exception of cross-listed courses or permission of the instructor.

* Honours courses offered in Oshawa may have different course content. Contact the Sociology Department for informaion.

* Economics-Administration 2200H, Geography-Environmental and Resource Science-Biology 2080H, Mathematics-Statistics 1500Y, Psychology 2016H and 2017H or Psychology 3150Y are equivalent to Sociology 316oH for program requirements, but do not count as a Sociology credit. Students who have successfully completed an equivalent to SOCI 3160H are not permitted to take SOCI 3160H.

* B.Sc. Nursing professional program students who have a achieved satisfactory standing in Nursing 2030H and 3030H and who wish to take sociology courses for a joint major are exempt from the sociology research methods (Soci-2150Y) requirement. This policy is not meant to exclude students from taking Sociology 2150Y.

* Students who have fulfilled the requirements for a single-major Honours degree in another subject may apply to the Office of the Registrar for a minor in Sociology, if they have met the requirements for the joint-major General degree.
