The Department of Sociology at Trent University is pleased to be offering a new course on human trafficking this fall at its Oshawa campus.
SOCI 4040H - “Modern Slavery, Human Trafficking and Contemporary Abolitionism” aims to provide the essential information, scholarly knowledge and practical skills for students to combat modern slavery (“human trafficking”). Students will identify the root causes of modern slavery; examine international and national legal approaches and law enforcement efforts; explore the influence of new media; and consider the unique needs of victims and survivors. The course will also develop ideas to abolish slavery. Emphasis will be placed on the Canadian experience, including the trafficking of Aboriginal women and students’ awareness of their complicity in modern day slavery. A course in academic activism, students will investigate and document possible cases of human trafficking in Canada. The results will be used in practical anti-slavery work.
