Awards and Bursaries
The Sociology Department offers several prizes and bursaries each year to promising students in sociology. These awards are detailed below. (In addition to these prizes offered by the Sociology Department, students should also check listings provided by at the Financial Aid Office regarding other scholarships and bursaries available to Trent University students.) Rodney F. White Memorial Bursary
A bursary is available for students, preferably in sociology, who can demonstrate financial need. Application guidelines are listed in the University calendar.
Rodney F. White Memorial Prizes
Shortly after Rodney White obtained his doctorate in medical and occupational sociology from the University of Chicago in 1964, he became Chair of the Sociology Department at Trent University , where he held this position from 1969-1994. In addition to his work in the Sociology Department, Rodney was involved in creating the Administrative and Policy Studies Program and Faculty Council, and was also a member of Senate. In memory of Rodney White, these two prizes were established for sociology students.
Two prizes of $100 are available. One is awarded to the student with the highest mark in SO 210, the other to the student with the highest academic average upon entering Honours fourth year. Prizes are awarded after final grades have been received in May, and will be mailed to students' homes.
TUSC Essay Prize
The Trent University Sociology Collective has recently established one prize of $50 (with plaque) to be awarded to a sociology student in first semester who demonstrated excellence in research and essay writing. Students and professors are encouraged to submit student papers to TUSC for this prize. A committee of TUSC will evaluate essays. (This prize is pending TUSC and faculty approval).
TUSC Commitment Prize
One $50 prize and plaque will be awarded to a graduating sociology student (outside the TUSC executive) who has shown a commitment to the sociology program and to TUSC outside the classroom. Students and professors are encouraged to nominate students who are suitable for this prize. The recipient will be chosen by the TUSC executive and will receive the prize in mid-April. (This prize is pending TUSC and faculty approval).
Graduate Scholarships
Students planning to continue to graduate school http://www.trentu.ca/gradstudies should inquire at the Research and Graduate Studies Office 705-748-1011 x1346 about graduate scholarships. This should be done in the spring before your fourth year, as application deadlines come up very quickly in the fall.
