Trent University has over 50 emergency phones that are either pole or wall mounted and topped with a blue light that begins to strobe when the red emergency button is activated.

The units in Peterborough are yellow in colour for daytime visibility with the word "Emergency" in large blue letters.  Each phone has a two button keypad.

  • The RED button is for emergency use and will initiate an immediate response by Campus Security.
  • The BLACK button connects you to the Trent University automated attendant for free internal calls.
  • Here are phone location maps for Symons and Traill campuses.

Emergency Phones Currently Out of Order

Trent University Campus Security strives to ensure that all 50+ emergency phones remain functional at all times by conducting routine testing of every phone. However, due to the mechanical nature of the phones and the extreme weather conditions we sometimes experience, there are occasions when the emergency phones break down. In this section we will be posting the locations of phones that are currently out of order. We are hopeful that community members familiarize themselves with all of the phones in their area, as well as this list of emergency phones deficiencies.

In the event you discover that an Emergency Phone is not working properly, please notify us at security@trentu.ca and we will have the unit repaired as soon as possible.

Peterborough

Pay Phones

In addition, all Pay Phones on the Peterborough campuses have been upgraded to perform the function of emergency phones.  There are three free speed dial buttons on each phone.

  • The first (red) is a direct line to security;
  • the second (yellow) says "Info" and will connect you with the Trent auto-attendant and
  • the third (green) is a direct line to WalkHome.

The presence of these phones on campus cannot guarantee your safety, but they can play an important role in your personal security and the security of the campus in general. If you are new to Trent, familiarize yourself with the location of the phones along your routes.

Press the RED Emergency Button In the Case of an Emergency

  • This will connect you directly with Campus Security  or Telephone Answering Service, who will in turn put you in contact with the appropriate agency.

  • This button is incorporated with an automatic identification feature which allows the dispatcher to know the exact location you are calling from.
  • Campus Security will attend all RED button activations.
  • The RED button may be activated in situations where you are being physically threatened; you are being followed and feel uncomfortable or anxious; an accident has occurred and assistance is needed.

BLACK call button

  • Press the BLACK call button and follow the verbal instructions, to contact the Trent University auto attendant.
  • Use the BLACK button for assistance if your car won't start; you need a WalkHome; you're locked out; or you need to report a non-emergency situation.
  • Campus Security will not attend BLACK button activations unless requested by the caller for a specific reason.

Walkhome - Peterborough Campus Only

  • To contact Walkhome, press the BLACK button.
  • When the auto attendant comes on the line, say: "Walkhome".  Your call will be directed to the Walkhome dispatcher.

The telephones do not require any money to be deposited and there is no receiver for you to pick up.

VANDALISM OR UNWARRANTED ACTIVATION OF AN EMERGENCY PHONE JEOPARDIZES THE SAFETY OF OTHERS. FOR THIS REASON, THESE ACTIONS WILL BE TAKEN VERY SERIOUSLY BY CAMPUS SECURITY. MISUSE OF THE TELEPHONES MAY SUBJECT YOU TO DISCIPLINARY OR LEGAL ACTION.
