Li had a death in her family at the beginning of the school year which had a terrible emotional effect on her. She saw her doctor and sought counselling and decided against dropping her courses because she thought that she could keep up her work. Li ended up failing two half-courses. Her petition was denied at CUP because she did not present supporting paperwork. She appealed to Special Appeals and included with her appeal letters from her doctor and counsellor. At the hearing she explained factually the effect the death had on her, and pointed out that she had been a B student the previous year. The panel granted Li retroactive withdrawal from the courses which would remove the failures from her transcript. (Note: Li could have saved herself a lot of trouble had she just presented the supporting letters to CUP.)
