By helping Canadian universities and their affiliated research institutes and hospitals become world-class centres of research and research training, the Chairs Program contributes to enhancing Canada's competitiveness in the global, knowledge-based economy, improving Canadians' health, and enriching our social and cultural life. The Chairs Program also seeks to:
- strengthen research excellence in Canada and increase Canada's research capacity by attracting and retaining the best researchers
- improve the training of highly qualified personnel through research
- improve universities' capacity to generate and apply new knowledge
