Trent University Stages Battle of the Books

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Winning book to be read by University community for Trent Reads 2012

Wednesday, January 25, 2012, Peterborough

Members of the Trent University community will gather for the Battle of the Books, to decide which book will be read for Trent Reads 2012, on Wednesday, February 1 in Peter Gzowski College, Room 114 at 7 p.m. and the public is invited to be part of the event.

Each year, everyone at Trent is encouraged to read the same book, to share in the common experience, and to discuss the book with arriving first-year students during Introductory Seminar Week. The Battle of the Books is a key event in determining which book shall be chosen, followed by a period of online voting during which the winning book is selected.

Four books have made the shortlist for Trent Reads 2012: Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen, The Truth About Stories by Thomas King, The Flying Troutmans by Miriam Toews, and The Englishman’s Boy by Guy Vanderhaeghe.

Trent students, faculty and staff will gather at the Battle of the Books 2012 to listen to “champions” argue the winning points of each of the books. Champions for 2012 include the Trent Central Student Association president Sheldon Willerton, Peter Gzowski College head Melanie Buddle, and Trent University Oshawa student association board member Ellysa Chenery. Trent provost Dr. Gary Boire along with student leaders will read excerpts from each book.

Once the Battle of the Books comes to an end, the real battle begins as students, faculty, staff and alumni will vote online for their favourite book. Online voting will run from February 2 – February 10, 2012.
