Economics and the Environment: Are Economists Doing Their Job?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Economics Expert Don Drummond to Speak at Trent University on November 4

Friday, October 31, 2008, Peterborough

The Trent University Department of Economics invites the community to attend the second annual Harry Kitchen Lecture in Public Policy presented by Don Drummond, senior vice president and chief economist of the TD Bank Financial Group, on Tuesday, November 4 at 4:00 p.m. in the Bata Library Film Theatre.

Mr. Drummond will be discussing the theme “Economics and the Environment: Are Economists Doing Their Job?”. Formerly the Assistant Deputy Minister in the federal Ministry of Finance, Mr. Drummond was responsible for economic analysis, fiscal policy, tax policy, social policy and federal-provincial relations. In particular, Mr. Drummond coordinated the planning of the annual federal budgets. In June 2000, Mr. Drummond joined the TD Bank as Senior Vice President and Chief Economist. He leads TD Economics' work in analyzing and forecasting economic performance in Canada and abroad. Mr. Drummond travels widely across Canada and internationally, speaking to various groups about the Canadian economy and its prospects and he is frequently quoted by the media on economic and policy issues.

This annual special event is held in honour of retired Professor Emeritus Harry Kitchen and reflects his strong research commitment to economic policy in Canada. “Our goal each year is to invite an economist who has made significant contributions to economic policy in this country through the use of sound economic analysis,” explained Professor Byron Lew, chair of the economics department. “In addition to being an opportunity to engage both the Trent and public communities, it is hoped that this event will evolve into an annual reunion for our past graduates as well.”

The Bata Library Film Theatre is located on the ground floor of Bata Library on Symons Campus at Trent University. The lecture is open to all and admission is free.
