Eight Trent University Professors Contribute to Groundbreaking New Philosophy Guide

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Book Launch for Columbia Companion to Twentieth-Century Philosophies Scheduled for August 28 at Trent

Friday, August 24, 2007, Peterborough

A book launch will be held on Tuesday, August 28 in the Senior Common Room of Trent University’s downtown Traill College at 2 p.m. to celebrate the release of Columbia Companion to Twentieth-Century Philosophies, a groundbreaking new guide to philosophy, featuring the writing of eight Trent University professors.

“That this volume emerged from Trent is unsurprising: the Trent philosophy department is known for its commitment to a well-rounded education comprising diverse traditions,” said Dr. Moira Howes, chair of Trent’s Department of Philosophy. “Scholars will be very pleased that a volume with such breadth now exists and the Companion will be an excellent resource for our students.”

Edited by Dr. Constantin Boundas, Professor Emeritus in Trent’s Philosophy Department, Columbia Companion to Twentieth-Century Philosophies is the first guide to cover both the Anglo-American analytic and European continental traditions. Organized thematically, the volume thoroughly discusses the major movements and range of analytic, continental, East Asian, and African philosophies of the twentieth century.

Of the 41 chapters included in the book, seven chapters are written by current and emeriti Trent professors including Professor Emeritus Boundas, Trent philosophy professors Emilia Angelova, Robert Carter, Bernard Hodgson, Douglas McDermid, David Morris and Michael Neumann, and Trent cultural studies professor Andrew Wernick.

The book launch is jointly sponsored by Trent University’s Philosophy Department and the Centre for the Study of Theory, Culture and Politics, with the co-operation of Columbia University Press.
