Trent University is pleased to announce that Dr. Chris Metcalfe, professor of Environmental and Resource Studies, will be presented with the Distinguished Research Award, one of the University’s top honours, at the 10 a.m. convocation ceremony on Wednesday, May 30.

Since coming to the University in 1984, Prof. Metcalfe has played an important role in raising the profile of the environmental sciences at Trent. In addition, he has personally contributed to the development of many of the University’s state-of-the-art facilities, including the Environmental Sciences Building and the Worsfold Water Quality Centre.

In the words of one of Prof. Metcalfe’s many nominators, “Chris is a world-class research scientist…it would probably be very difficult to find a more appropriate and deserving person for a Distinguished Research Award. He has devoted nearly all of his working life to Trent University, and the University has benefited very considerably.”

Prof. Metcalfe’s focus in research and teaching has been on determining the environmental fate and toxic effects of organic contaminants in the aquatic environment.
Most recently, his research on the distribution and effects of pharmaceuticals released into the environment has awarded him significant national and international profile. Prof. Metcalfe is also the author of over 150 journal articles and book chapters, several of which have been published in such high-impact journals as Environmental Health Perspectives and Environmental Science and Technology.

In addition to his research work, Prof. Metcalfe has served in a number of key administrative positions at Trent including: director of Watershed Ecosystems Graduate program (twice); chair of ERS program; and dean of research and graduate studies. Currently, he is the director of the Watershed Science Centre.

Established in 1986, the Distinguished Research Award is given annually to a member of the Trent University faculty in recognition of outstanding achievements in research and scholarship.
