Trent’s Future Teachers hold Environmental Science Workshop Day for Elementary Students on March 1

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

140 Students in Grades 4, 5, and 6 at Millbrook-South Cavan Public School to Attend Workshops at Camp Kawartha

Monday, February 26, 2007, Peterborough

Trent University education students currently enrolled in a course designed to show them how to teach environmental science in the classroom will hold an Environmental Science Workshop Day for grade 4, 5 and 6 students from Millbrook-South Cavan Public School on Thursday, March 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at Camp Kawartha.

Currently in its third year, Environmental Science Workshop Day is an annual event organized by students in the Environmental Science for Teacher Education course at Trent. Fifty-four students, mainly Queen’s-Trent Concurrent Education students and students in Trent’s Emphasis on Teacher Education Program, are enrolled in the course this year.
Approximately 140 students from the junior grades at Millbrook-South Cavan Public School will be bussed to Camp Kawartha for the March 1 event, which will feature a series of 12 different workshops.

Each workshop will be led by a group of two to five Trent students, and their audiences will vary in number from 32 (Grade 6 students) to 55 (Grade 4 students). The topic for each workshop is linked to the Ontario Science and Technology Curriculum, and each contains a message to promote environmental stewardship. Every workshop includes interesting and educational hands-on activities, and half involve outdoor activities designed to teach the children about the natural environment.

Workshop topics include: animal adaptation, endangered and invasive species, weather and acid rain, biomagnification, our ecological footprint, rocks and minerals, urban sprawl and habitat loss, winter ecology, biodiversity and natural disasters.

The Camp Kawartha event is the second of two practicum activities students in the Environmental Science for Teacher Education course are required to complete. The first practicum was an Environmental Science Exhibition day delivered to approximately 250 students in grades one to six at Millbrook South Cavan Public School on November 30.
